The Getty
Center is an operating program of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
The Center is one of the most distinctive architectural achievements
in Los Angeles and an excellent place to spend an afternoon. The Museum
collects in seven distinct areas including: Greek and Roman antiquities,
European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts,
and European and American photographs. Just as compelling as the art
at the Getty is the wonderful architecture of the buildings and the
panoramic views from the property. |

The Getty Villa in Malibu is open
again to the public after the completion of a major renovation project.
The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the
study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria.
Bordered by coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Getty Villa
evokes the classical world in its architecture, landscape, and gardens,
which have been planted with species known to have flourished in the
ancient Mediterranean. The Outer Peristyle of the Villa offers dramatic
views of the Museum building and the Pacific Ocean. |

The Huntington Library,
Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens:
For qualified scholars, the Library is one of the largest and most
complete research libraries in the United States in its fields of specialization. The
Art Collections are distinguished by their specialized character and elegant
settings. The Huntington Gallery (the original mansion) is currently closed
for renovation (scheduled to be open in late May 2008). Visitors can see Gainsborough's "The Blue Boy," Lawrence's "Pinkie," and
other favorite works of British and French art in the Erburu Gallery while
the renovation is under way. Other galleries, exhibits, and gardens remain
open. Henry Huntington began developing the Botanical Gardens in 1903.
Now they span nearly 150 acres with sweeping lawns and vistas interspersed
with statuary, tempiettos, and benches. The Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory
for Botanical Science opened October 7, 2005, adding a public exhibition
and interactive learning space to the existing facilities for botanical
research. In February 2008 the “Garden of Flowing Fragrance” opened to the public. It is filled with more than 70 plant types, including native Chinese weeping willows and camellias. It is modeled after the elegant gardens of Suzhou, an ancient city in China’s Jiangsu province near Shanghai, and curator June Li worked with a team of advisors and designers to ensure authenticity. |

The Los Angeles
Country Museum of Art (LACMA) has the broadest collection
of art in Los Angeles. LACMA is located in the Miracle Mile area of
Los Angeles. Behind the museum in Hancock Park are the famous La Brea
Tar Pits. The permanant collection here includes large amounts of American
Art, European paintings & sculpture, ancient and Islamic Art, Chinese
and Korean art, modern and contemporary art, photography, drawings
and sketches, costumes and textiles and exciting touring collections.
LACMA regularly shows films in their theatres- everything from student
short films to retrospectives of the work of acclaimed directors. This
museum houses models and pictures of some of Frank Gehry's amazing
architectural works. Now through June 30, 2006 LACMA is presenting
a special exhibition of five important paintings by Austrian artist
Gustav Klimt (18621918). The paintings were recently returned
by the Austrian government to the family of Maria Altmann, of Los Angeles,
following a lengthy legal dispute over the rightful ownership of these
works stolen by the Nazi regime. |
