Continuing Education
Who Should Attend
This symposium is designed for all health care professionals who are in any way involved in management of patients who have disorders treatable with hematopoietic cell transplantation. This includes hematologic malignancies, immune deficiency disorders, marrow failure syndromes and a large number of life-threatening congenital disorders including sickle cell anemia and transfusion-dependent thalassemia.
Participants will include transplant and hematology/oncology physicians, PhD researchers, RN and LVN transplant coordinators and care givers, PharmDs, licensed Clinical Laboratory personnel (MT, CLS, MLT), Histocompatibility Personnel (CHA, CHT, CHS), as well as administrators and patients.
Educational Objectives of this Program
- Describe state of the art of UCB transplantation.
- Discuss the indications for and effectiveness of double cord blood transplants.
- Discuss conditioning regimens including reduced intensity conditioning.
- Compare outcomes of cord blood transplants with bone marrow transplants and peripheral blood stem cell transplants, including incidence of GVHD.
- Identify factors that affect UCBT outcome, including cell doses, HLA-match and processing methods.
- Critique the search process for cord blood units and how to make UCBT more available.
- Describe obstacles to a successful UCBT and the basic science approaches and clinical strategies to overcome them.
- Describe progress in regenerative medicine using cord blood stem cells.
- Discuss current issues in cord blood banking.
