The mission statement of the California Blood Bank Society, established in 1951, is "We help save lives of people who need blood". Physicians, scientists, administrators, clinical laboratory scientists, medical technologists, registered and licensed vocational nurses, donor resource personnel and product management specialists make up the CBBS individual membership, currently numbering over 500. Our institutional members represent hospital and community blood centers as well as transfusion and transplantation centers. Individual and institutional members come from across the United States, the majority being located in the West Coast area. The CBBS supports everyone involved in transfusion medicine by providing objective education, strengthening professional relationships, responding to regional issues and encouraging collaborative efforts.

The Cord Blood Forum is a non-commercial, non-political source of information and an opportunity for communication among transplant physicians, transplant coordinators, cord blood bankers, and patients. Cord blood transplantation is still a comparatively new approach to hematopoietic cell transplantation and there are many issues that deserve discussion and clarification. These issues can and should be advanced outside of the occasional medical meetings throughout the year. The ultimate goal is to benefit patients in need of a hematopoietic cell transplant. The primary mission of the Cord Blood Forum is to serve patients for whom a hematopoietic cell transplant is indicated by disseminating information about the availability and effectiveness of cord blood transplants for children and adults.
