Union Square
Virtually every fashion label in the world has set up shop in and around Union Square, a landmark park in the heart of the downtown shopping and hotel district. Granite plazas, a stage, a café and four grand entrance corner plazas bordered by the park's signature palms, pay tribute to the Square's distinctive history and offer a forum for civic celebrations. The cable cars head up Powell Street from here and flowerstands populate every corner. Thousands originally from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam have given the Tenderloin, a 20-square-block district west of Union Square new life. A landmark church, an experimental theatre house, jazz and blues clubs, restaurants and cafes point to a neighborhood renaissance.

San Francisco Museum of Craft and DesignIn 2004, the San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design opened its doors as an unconventional start-up museum with an eye on exhibiting, interpreting and communicating contemporary work in craft and design. Their goal is simple: to encourage the appreciation and the understanding of craft and design, as well as to acknowledge their strong connections to each other. Pushing traditional boundaries between these disciplines allows us to experiment at the edge of what is possible in offering innovative exhibitions, installations, and related educational programming for the local community, visitors to the area and museum members, including children, teens and seniors. 550 Sutter Street San Francisco, 94102

The San Francisco PlayhouseFounded by Susi Damilano and Bill English in 2003, the SF Playhouse is Union Square's intimate, professional theatre. Using Equity actors and world class design, the SF Playhouse, about which the San Francisco Chronicle raved, "San Francisco's newest theatre isn't just another tiny stage carved out of a storefront . . . its an enticing introduction to a new company," has become an intimate theatre alternative to the traditional Union Square theatre fare, garnering 20 Bay Area Theatre Critic nominations in its first year. Providing a creative home and inspiring environment where actors, directors, writers, designers, and theatre lovers converge, SF Playhouse, hailed as a "small delicacy" by SF Weekly and "eclectic" by the San Francsico Bay Guardian, strives to create works that celebrate the human spirit. 533 Sutter Street, San Francisco, 94102 |
