South of Market is known as "SOMA." Yerba Buena Gardens, “the largest concentration of art west of the Hudson River,” is an oasis in the heart of the city. Moscone Center and more than a dozen museums are located here as well as a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The University of California-San Francisco, Mission Bay, is the largest biomedical university expansion in the United States. The home of the San Francisco Giants, AT&T Park, is nearby. The South Beach area, recently transformed into a mixed-use waterfront neighborhood, includes the restored warehouses in the South End Historic District and several marinas.

Yerba Buena GardensIn 1980, Mayor Dianne Feinstein and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency issued an invitation to developers worldwide to "create ... in the heart of one of the world's great cities, an environment in the form of a magnificent urban garden. . ." The culmination of this process are the gardens we walk among today, along with several other projects in different stages of growth. An award-winning public facility, features a children’s garden, public art, museums, a historic carousel, ice-skating and bowling centers. Open daily sunrise-10pm. Yerba Buena Arts and Events,programs all of the outdoor events in Yerba Buena Gardens. They offer over 200 free artistic, cultural and community programs from May to October as part of what is called the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. These events include jazz concerts, art displays, poetry readings and puppet shows as well as commercial events. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Historical Society (GLBTHS)GLBTHS collects, preserves, and interprets the history of GLBT people and the communities that support them.
