Japantown/ Fillmore

Founded in 1906 Japantown, Nihonmachi or J-Town as it is known to San Francisco’s 12,000 citizens of Japanese descent, is the oldest in the United States and one of only three remaining. This small slice of Japanese life is just a few octaves away from the Fillmore, the “Harlem of the West,” which is witnessing a revival of its jazz heritage and is the setting for an annual open-air jazz festival. NOPA, an acronym for north of the (Golden Gate Park) panhandle, has been dubbed an “urban frontier” by The New York Times and is increasingly on the foodies’ GPS for late night suppers.

Japan Center

Experience Japan in San Francisco! The Center and the adjacent blocks of Japantown are home to scores of shops and restaurants, non-profit community organizations, two hotels, and a variety of other businesses that provide a wonderful opportunity for visitors and locals alike to explore and experience the customs and culture of Japan right in the heart of The City.

On many weekends -- particularly during the spring Cherry Blossom Festival and the summer months --you’ll see traditional Japanese music and dance performances, flower arranging demonstrations, martial arts presentations, and a variety of other cultural events.

Fillmore Street

Fillmore Street, the neighborhood's main commercial strip, reflects the Fillmore's diversity: family-owned neighborhood-serving retail mixes with chain stores, jazz clubs, ethnic restaurants of many varieties, and empty storefronts. Some of the stores, restaurants, and clubs lost to redevelopment are memorialized by plaques on the sidewalk. Two prominent music venues are located in the neighborhood: the historic Fillmore Auditorium, and the San Francisco branch of Yoshi's jazz club.
