Griffith Observatory Griffith Observatory is an icon of Los Angeles, a national leader in public astronomy, a beloved civic gathering place, and one of Southern California's most popular attractions. The Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, just above the Los Feliz neighborhood. It is 1,134 feet above sea level and is visible from many parts of the Los Angeles basin. Griffith Observatory was originally conceived by some of the finest scientific minds of the 1930s and built with the finest materials of the day. Following a $93 million renovation, the Observatory reopened to the public on November 3, 2006, retaining its art deco exterior, while restoring the building and replacing the aging planetarium dome. The building was expanded underground, with completely new exhibits, a café run by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, gift shop, and the new Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater. Admission to the museum continues to be free. Tickets for the show Centered in the Universe in the 290-seat Samuel Oschin Planetarium Theater are purchased separately at the box office within the observatory. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
Parking at the Observatory is very limited. Please be aware that there may be an uphill walk to the Observatory from some of the parking available along the roads.
